Our Story:

The Matzoh Boys was created in 2006 with one aim: to combine our passion for Jewish music with our ability to fill the dance floor.

Guitarist Peter and Trumpet player Jake met in the musical hotbed of Manchester. They began playing Klezmer and were amazed at how the music brought the generations together, and people danced till they dropped! They formed a band to capture that energy, and moved to London where they brought in amazing musicians who felt the same way about getting the party going.

Our line-up includes some of the best musicians in the UK - our hot Brazilian rhythm section can lay down a soulful Mizrahi groove or switch into a cool Samba at a moment's notice; our virtuoso Romanian violinist Bogdan (click here for a video of him in action), is one of the few players in the country who can really play in the grand European school of Itzhak Perlman as well as improvise on any given theme at high speed! And our pop singers are equally at home recording in Abbey Road or touring with international pop acts as they are performing at your Simcha.

When we met Jonny we immediately knew we had found a soulful singer with the the same passion and fresh take on Jewish music - our team was complete!

We take a unique approach to every Simcha, we really like to go the extra mile to play the music you want and create the atmosphere you are looking for, whether its that festival feeling, a jazz club vibe or a good old-fashioned party!

Meet the band:

As soon as Peter started playing Klezmer, he was reminded of what his Grandma Evelyn used to tell him:

Never forget who you are and where you came from!
She told him stories of her youth in the East End where her father ran a theatre, bringing the stars of Yiddish music from all over the world to London. Singers such as Sophie Tucker used to stay with them when they were in town, and she passed all this heritage and love for the music to her grandson.

Peter merges Klezmer's evocative sounds with Flamenco techniques learned from playing with Spanish Gypsies, as well as South American guitar styles picked up while living in Argentina and Brazil.

He is one of the driving rhythmical forces behind the Matzoh Boys!

Jake fell in love with Jewish music when he started playing Klezmer in Manchester almost 20 years ago and has since become one of the UK's leading specialists in Klezmer, Balkan and Latin Trumpet playing. His playing provides a beautiful melodic accompiment at the Chuppah whilst also bringing the energy needed for the Israeli dancing with the authentic sound of Klezmer brass.

Through his session work he has also recorded and toured with the likes of Paloma Faith, Culture Club, Vampire Weekend and The Streets.

Jake loves to sing backing vocals, lending rich harmonies especially on Israeli tunes to help the music sound as full as possible.

Vocalist Jonny Mosesson hails from Aden, a port town on the ancient spice route where Eastern influences merge with Spanish and North African music.

Jewish music and Jazz are at the core of his musicality, the end goal being to warm your hearts. An established name in the Jewish simcha world, his voice will take you above and beyond your expectations, providing a truly exhilarating performance infused with a spiritual atmosphere.

He has been invited to sing at chuppahs across the world, from Johannesburg to Jerusalem. Inspired by Carlebach and contemporaries Yonatan Razel and Evyatar Banai, he incorporates Jazz leanings such as Sinatra, King Pleasure and Thelonious Monk making for a truly authentic sound.

Bis Bas:

We also have a sister band, Bis Bas, performing original music at festivals and jazz clubs. Inspired by the wealth of Jewish music both ancient and modern, we formed the band to bring this beautiful repertoire into the 21st Century.
